Operating Systems

Machines

Just stating the obvious here but Computers are machines. Computers do not have a mind of there own (although some users may debate this..). Computers must be given a clear set of instructions so they can understand the users intentions. Translating what you want into something the 'machine' can understand is the job of the "Operating System".

Various Systems

Not all Computers or Operating Systems (OS) are the same. There are various architectures (types of hardware) and numerous versions of the various operating systems...

Linux

Linux has been around since 1991 and is currently gaining popularity as an alternative to Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. Great Southern Computer Services provides extensive support for both Linux and Microsoft Windows, while to a lesser degree, also offering some support for Mac OS X and Unix (including BSD). We recommend Debian/GNU Linux on Workstations & Servers, while Zorin OS (based on Ubuntu) is an excellent choice for the average Desktop PC and/or Laptop user.

Microsoft Windows

Most computer users are familiar with at least one or more versions of the Micrsoft Windows Operating System, introduced in 1985. Microsoft controls a large percentage of the PC market (~90%) however there are a variety of other systems available.

Apple

The popular Apple "Macintosh" system was introduced in 1984 and has traditionally had a high level of use in the Education and Graphics Design sectors. Apple's popularity has increased dramatically in recent times, since the introduction of the iPhone and the even more recent ipad, however, Apple is known to maintain a fairly closed or "Walled Garden" approach to business, meaning that consumers are often bound by Vendor Lock-in": Apple computers and devices work well with other Apple products but do not always 'play nice' with technologies from other vendors.

Unix

The Unix operating system has been around since 1969 while other systems, like BSD (and other unix-like variants) and Plan 9 have also been around a long time.
